Brazil Fines TikTok Parent ByteDance Nearly $30 Million Over Children’s Data
The Brazilian data protection agency has fined the parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, almost $30 million for illegally collecting and processing the data of about 8 million minors without any legal basis or adequate protection measures. There were some significant issues with the age verification process of TikTok, which were highlighted in particular in relation to its "logged-out feed," which allowed the use of the app by the minors even without having an account—an option not available in the USA and Europe. Besides the penalty, ByteDance was asked to remove all the illegally obtained data.
